How to drain lawn mower oil

Posted on May 9, 2022 by Cecil Andrews

In order to change the oil in your Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engine, you must do so in one of three ways. Each has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, which we will discuss in greater depth later.
Drain plug is a technique.

Method using a vacuum pump and a dipstick.

Tilt the lawn mower to drain the oil from the dipstick.
By running your lawn mower for 5 to 15 minutes, warm up the engine oil. The oil will drain more easily if the carbon and residue are stirred up.
Once a year, or after 50 hours of use, you should drain the oil from your Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engine. By doing this, carbon and sludge buildup in the engine is prevented.

Oil drain valve position

Most small Briggs and Stratton engines have an oil drain plug, which can be found either on the bottom or on the side of the engine, depending on the particular model. The oil drain plug on a lawn mower will be located under the engine the majority of the time. Tilting the lawn mower and looking for the oil drain plug should do the trick.
A 3/8 drain plug, a 7/16 square end drain plug bolt, or a 1/4 hex head Allen drain plug bolt will all be available depending on the model and type of lawn mower you’re using.
Proceed to warm up the lawn mower for a few minutes if you want. To ensure your safety, turn off the lawn mower and unplug the spark plug wire.
Pulling the lawn mower to the side will allow you to unplug the drain. Place a pan of oil underneath the lawn mower and tilt the pan down to allow the oil to drain from the mower. I like to stack a few bricks under each wheel of the lawn mower to allow the drain pan to fit underneath it.
Replacing and tightening the drain plug after all of the oil has been drained is recommended. Leaks can be prevented by installing new washers or o-rings.

How to change lawn mower oil without drain plug

You’ll need a vacuum pump to remove the oil from the dipstick tube if your lawn mower isn’t equipped with an oil drain plug, as mine was.
Start the lawn mower for 5 to 10 minutes to warm up the oil, which will improve the flow of the oil.
To drain the oil from my lawn mower engine, I use a dipstick oil change pump connected to a short hose. You can use 10W-40 or 10W-30 engine oil after the old one runs out.

Change your lawn mower oil annually. New oil vs old oil.

This is after a year of using the lawn mower once a week, as you can see in the image above. The oil has turned extremely dark. Oil should be changed every 6 months if the vehicle is subjected to heavy use.
If you are extremely picky about your motor oil, you can use a fully synthetic motor oil. We must admit, however, that the majority of lawn mowers do not have high-capacity motors.

When was the last time you changed your lawn mower’s oil?

Fuel tank capacity on a lawnmower
A wide range of lawn mower motors are available for different-sized lawn mowers. As a result, buying 1L/Quart of oil will suffice for a standard-sized 375 small engine lawn mower, which has an oil capacity of $0.65 or 0.6L.
Make sure to check the oil level with the dipstick.

Tilt the lawn mower to drain the oil

Although tilting the lawn mower to drain the engine oil is generally discouraged, it can be done. In order to burn off the oil spilled during startup, the lawn mower makes a loud sucking sound.
With four-stroke engines, this type of engine oil is used to lubricate everything from piston rings to sealant to piston sealant. There are a variety of places where an oiled lawn mower can become stuck. When the engine has been running for a while, this can make starting and blowing smoke difficult.
Warm the engine for 5-15 minutes before changing the oil. For your own safety, unplug the spark plug wire.
